Paperchase Plus

Client: Paperchase Category: Product Design Services: UI / Design / Illustration / Animation

Creating the first digital offering for this established high street retailer, offering bespoke stationery personalisation on both iOS and Android devices.

Working closely with a team of product specialists, including a UX researcher/designer and a team of engineers my role was create a sub-brand for Paperchase, a design system and all screens for an initial MVP of the App. This focused on the personalisation of Cards and Notebooks.

Using only a visual lead from the various brand elements, there was a great opportunity to create a complete design system from the ground up. The concept for this was ‘digital tactile stationary’. Using subtle elements stationary lovers would resonate with, shadows to create the look of paper stacks and card wallets, sticker inspired UI plus the classic eurohook to create an app with personality.

Identity

Part of the requirement for the app was to give it its own identity. We decided to name it ‘Paperchase Plus’ to reflect the way the users would be able to ‘add more’ by personalising various Paperchase products. The hand drawn ink ‘splat’ was developed to be in keeping with the main brand, whilst reinforcing creative individuality.

Illustration: The Bear

Meet Milo the Bear. Named after my dog, who is a 54kg Akita / Rottweiler / Great Dane mix, yes literally a bear! The illustration was added to the design system to bring a level of playful-ness to the app as part of the brand ethos. A fun ‘voice’ to both welcome and inform the user.

UI / Design System

A comprehensive design system was created for the app, creating its own visual identity and guidelines that could sit comfortably within the main company’s. The design system covered a new colour palette, typography, all the UI styling plus other various bespoke graphic assets. The concept was to give the app a real tactile stationary feel, through the use of stacking of cards, swatches, the eurohook and shadows.

Micro Interactions

To give the app more personality micro interactions were added at key moments in the user journey. This helped not only reassure the user their actions were executed, but gave a chance for a certain level of playfulness and sophistication to the app, ultimately enhancing the whole experience.

Road Map / Prototyping

Part of my role was to road map the potential developments for the app. After some research and customer feedback I focused on how we could personalise the Gift Wrap experience in a ‘Paperchase way’. Exploring the UX, I initially created two routes; Easy and Advance. After further development I created a complete prototype for the ‘Easy’ route as this combined the perfect combination of personalisation while ensuring the end result was on brand.
